79th Indonesian Independence Day: Flag Raising Ceremony to be Held Solely in IKN. The 79th Indonesian Independence Day celebration on August 17, 2024, will be centered in the new capital city, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will serve as the Inspector of the Ceremony, accompanied by the elected President, Prabowo Subianto.
The Independence Day ceremony will take place at two locations: IKN and the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. However, the main flag-raising ceremony will exclusively occur in IKN.
Centralized Flag-Raising Ceremony in IKN
Secretary of the State Secretariat Ministry, Setya Utama, confirmed that the flag-raising ceremony would only be held in IKN. "Yes, the flag-raising ceremony will only take place in IKN," Setya Utama told reporters on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
Guests attending the ceremony at Merdeka Palace will witness the flag-raising procession from IKN via a live broadcast. The national flag at Merdeka Palace will be raised in the morning without any special ceremony.
President Jokowi, alongside President-elect Prabowo Subianto, will lead the ceremony in IKN. Meanwhile, Vice President Ma'ruf Amin and Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka will attend the ceremony at Merdeka Palace. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM WIB (11:00 AM WITA).
Paskibraka's Role and the Inauguration
The Indonesian National Flag Hoisting Troop (Paskibraka) will be inaugurated by President Jokowi in IKN before the flag-raising ceremony. Setya Utama mentioned that the Paskibraka who served during the 78th Independence Day will be responsible for delivering the duplicate of the national flag from Monas to IKN.
"The inauguration will be in IKN. There are no options to assign the retired Paskibraka of 2023. The 2023 retired Paskibraka will perform the task of delivering the Duplicate of the National Flag," Setya clarified.
Limited Invitations Due to Infrastructure Constraints
Heru Budi Hartono, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, announced that only 2,000 invitations would be issued for the 79th Independence Day ceremony in IKN due to limited infrastructure.
The invitations will be divided into two sessions: 1,000 for the morning flag-raising ceremony and another 1,000 for the evening flag-lowering ceremony.
"Due to constraints, the 17th August ceremony in IKN and Jakarta will have approximately 1,000 invitations for the morning and 1,000 for the evening, plus 380 in the main hall," Heru explained in a broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Additional Locations and Invitations
In addition to IKN, the government will also host the 79th Independence Day ceremony at Merdeka Palace with 3,000 invited guests. The ceremony at Merdeka Palace will follow the military procedures of the IKN ceremony.
"For Jakarta, we have 1,500 invitations for the morning and 1,500 for the evening," Heru stated.
Heru also mentioned the provision of additional locations outside Merdeka Palace to accommodate 1,500 guests. Those unable to attend the main ceremony can watch from these additional locations.
"For those not accommodated in IKN, we hope they can be invited in Jakarta as well. The 17th August celebration will take place in two locations: IKN and Merdeka Palace," Heru concluded.
